JUNK TO FUNK: Make a Moon Base

Building Sustainable Moon Habitat with Recycled Materials

Hi Teachers & Principals,

We are very delighted to invite you to join our Art Competition for the upcoming SPACEFest. 🚀 Students work in team as lunar architects to design and make a moon base model by using recyclable materials🌕. Teachers will need to pick the best model for the exhibition and post it to us.

🙋 Who can register and join?

All Try-five+ 4th year classes are welcome to participate, however, schools are only allowed to submit one work per school. Students will need to work in groups to develop their moon base, and schools must ensure their selected submission piece is delivered to TU Dublin by end of business on the 30th of May at the latest.

💡How to make the model?

Teachers will need to organize their own workshops to help the students make their model. The teacher book and student workbook are attached for your reference (no need to use them but it will help you!!!), including examples of in-school workshop proposals, teaching plan, background knowledge for teachers, etc. The judge sheet is also provided to help you understand how the projects will be scored. It will also help students to better target and make plans for their design if you can share the judging standards at the opening part and during the process if needed. But remember! The support materials are just an optional guidance. Please feel free to modify/simplify the sheets for students to meet their learning need and adapt as you see fit to ensure the best outcome for your classroom given the time constrains.

We have posted support craft kits to help you with your build a moon base project to all schools that filled up the forms. Please let us know when you receive them. Materials for the remaining workshops will follow up soon.  If you haven’t filled the form but will still like to participate, please fill up the form before this Friday (May 16th): https://forms.office.com/e/arBqLZ8QBd?origin=lprLink

Friendly Reminder:

Functionality is optional (but awesome!)
If students make working circuits, fans, or solar panels, that’s a fantastic bonus! But remember, the three areas of the Moon Base don’t need to actually function—the priority is creativity, storytelling, and visual impact.

📦 How to submit your model?

You can post the entry model to us, but please ensure that the model is delivered before the 30th of MAY 2025 (Friday), or you can deliver it in person.  Mark it as Moon Base Art Competition for the attention of Zhuoqun Zang.

🏆 What about the final judging and prize-giving?

We will display all the submitted works on June 4th in TU Dublin, Grangegorman. A few representatives of the students who made the model will be invited to give a short presentation to the judges at their stands in TUD Grangegorman. All artworks will be judged by TUDublin staff and invited guests who are experts in space exploration. The 1st prize is a kit of Sphero Indi robots for your classroom! See image below!

Please note that we are looking for entries that show real thought and effort by the schools, and we reserve the right not to award a prize if the work submitted does not reflect genuine effort and quality work.

Please see more details in the Optional Guidance.

NOTE: SUBMISSIONS DEADLINE HAS PASSED. WE ARE NOT ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS ANYMORE. WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU ORGANISING A LOCAL SPACEFEST AT YOUR INSTITUTION.
