What is TryFive+?

STEM Try Five+ is a collaborative initiative designed to inspire and empower primary school students, particularly in DEIS schools, through a series of engaging and educational workshops focused on STEM topics. Developed in alignment with the Irish Primary School Curriculum, our program is research-informed and co-created with educators and industry experts to ensure it meets the needs of students and teachers alike.

Our goal is to increase science aspiration among young learners by enhancing their understanding and enjoyment of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). We strive to broaden students’ awareness of STEM career opportunities, improve their grasp of scientific methods, and foster a belief in the importance of STEM in everyday life. By challenging traditional stereotypes and promoting inclusivity, we aim to make STEM accessible to all students.

In partnership with Technological University Dublin, local schools, and industry volunteers, we deliver these workshops to 4th and 5th class pupils, providing them with the tools and confidence to explore STEM subjects. Our project also supports teachers through a range of resources, including a summer CPD training course, a teacher training manual, a pupil workbook, and a dedicated website.

At STEM Try Five +, we are committed to nurturing the next generation of innovators, scientists, and engineers by making STEM education exciting, relevant, and inclusive.

Access and Outreach

The Access and Outreach Service is cross-campus and is part of the Recruitment, Admissions and Participation Department. It ensures the widest possible participation in higher education of the local communities we serve and underrepresented groups, with a particular focus on the National Access Plan and the University’s Strategic Intent with regards to widening participation.

Access and Outreach comprises a suite of activities related to breaking down the barriers between higher education and communities which are historically underserved by it and providing opportunities for alternative entry routes. Close cooperation with targeted schools at primary and post primary levels and community groups are a hallmark of this activity, as well as maintaining expert levels of understanding and specific knowledge to be able to assist students from underrepresented backgrounds to access TU Dublin.
